A good starting ratio of coffee to water is 1:17. This translates to 20 grams, or roughly four tablespoons, of beans for a 12 ounce cup. If you don’t have a scale, use 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. Don’t be afraid to play with this ratio in order to find what tastes best to you.
Water makes up the majority of your coffee, so use clean, filtered water. It’s important for your brew water to be 200-205° F, which is about 30 seconds off the boil.
When possible, grind your coffee just before brewing using a burr grinder. Burr grinders uniformly crush the coffee, creating a more even extraction and better tasting brew.
Coffee peaks in flavor a few weeks after being roasted. For best results, buy fresh beans frequently. Store your coffee in an airtight container away from direct light and heat.
